Martti Kuoppa Retires From His Bike

Dear flatlanders all over the world,

21 years ago I would not imagine where my little bike would take me and how many great people it takes me to meet. I would not understand that one day I am in a position that I have a lot of people backing me up and showing their support and respect just because I busted out with my bike!

It was year 1991 when I started riding. Now we are reaching end of 2011 and in few days it will be new year again, and for me it will be something new as well because I am going to quit riding for good. Yes, you heard me right – you won´t see me on my bike anymore because I reached my personal limits in progression and I have to be very honest to everyone and especially to myself that that was the reason why I kept riding this long anyways. Yes, progression kept me going all these years and now I feel inside of me that I am not able to get my level higher than I got during these last 2 years (21 yrs). Trust me, I tried my best with tears, sweat and blood – also got a sickness on my body that most likely will never cure. So I don´t want to get to that state of mind ever again. Don´t get me wrong, it is definetely a good state of mind BUT it got a very dark flipside to it.

And why did I do it? Good question. At the end of the day I felt that I was doing it for myself to check out how far I can take the game but when I started publishing these videos on youtube I felt that I am oblicated to motivate other riders and show them ”a better way”. It all got mixed up in my head and I was in a position that I could not relax at all because new tricks where haunting me moment after moment. I was just waiting the time to pass at work so I could go out and try the new trick – for next 4 hours as long as my hands started to shake and I was about to pass out.

I made people around me miserable as well because I wasn´t doing very good in my own life at that point. One reason was that I was working at a job that I didn´t like at all – during my free time I escaped to the world of progression with flatland and that made me forget all the bullsh*t at work but ended up bringing me different kind of bugs inside of my head.

So on so on so on. I could actually write a book about all this but I am going to save you from that story for now and end this nice and smooth with words: Thank you again for supporting, understanding and all the help! The biggest respect you can show me now is to understand my decision and don´t diss me for that (or call me a quitter even if I am haha). It is not the easiest thing for me to say and I actually do this because I love flatland from the bottom of my heart but flatland keeps hurting my heart everytime I keep doing it so I must separate from flatland now because otherwise it would eat me alive… I also felt that I have reached a position in our flatland community that I need to tell you all this in an open letter instead of just dissapearing for good as people usually do.

MK has left the building with a one way bus ticket in the pocket. (and hopefully that bus ticket will take me one day to a hobby called flatland freestyle)

Sincerely yours, Martti Kuoppa

p.s. You should keep riding. Have fun and if you learn new tricks that´s great, if not that´s great too!

Simon O'Brien Interview

Colony flatland pro Simon O'Brien is one of the most creative pro flatland riders on the scene today, and one of the very few flatland riders to not pursue one specific style of flatland. Simon can do it all, from long, extremely difficult rolling links, to concentric front wheel links with style. And he's responsible for innovating a long list of tricks, as well as designing a signature frame, bars and forks for Colony. Recently, Simon (formerly a rider that favored videos over contests) decided to re-enter the world of flatland competitions, and before he left for Japan, he dropped an exclusive new video, shot by Colony Bikes filmer Stewart Munro. And if you never had the chance to check out either of his solo DVDs, here is your well-deserved introduction to the riding of a true Australian original. Can you tell us a little about your re-entry into the world of flatland competition?
O'Brien: It's come down to a timing thing really. I was planning on going back to Japan at this time and it just so happened that the G-Shock invite comp was at this time. I had heard really good things about the last event and Hiroshi from 430 invited me, so I was all for being a part of it!

How's everything with Colony going? Can you give us any details about their flatland program, as well as your signature line of products?
Colony is going great. I'm riding my signature frame and loving it -- great angles and lengths, good for all styles of flatland and even some mini ramp riding. At the moment with their flatland program, they're doing my signature parts and some other flat-specific products: pegs, seats, etc. It's going good.

What do you do for a living, or does BMX pay the bills?
Unfortunately, BMX does not pay the bills. I'm duty in a super market, and the work has always been good to me when I need time off for trips. I also take part in the occasional performing arts gig along with some demos. For the last teo years i have also been renovating a house, which is a lot of work and a great experience.

Since the release of your solo CD, have you thought about a follow up? And how much effort did it take to produce a full DVD of original riding?
After my solo DVD "Made You Look," I finally did a sequel called "Dejavu." I was happy with follow up, but thought it still could have been a bit better. I rushed it a little to try and promote my frame. A solo DVD is hard work. Sometimes you get caught in a rut of doing the same kind of tricks, and to continually try to do something new and different is difficult. I constantly need to set new goals and ride lots.

I know you also ride skateparks. How much of your time riding goes into not riding flatland?
I just love riding my bike, whether park or flat, it's all fun and outdoors. These days, if I'm not riding, I'm usually working. However, I have a bunch of great ideas for some lip tricks, so I'll be doing some serious skatepark time soon.

Can you tell us a little about your personal flatland spot at your house?
It's awesome. Years ago, my mom thought my brothers and my idea for a concrete slab in the front yard would be okay, and it has seriously been a great investment. Over the years, heaps of cricket and basketball games have gone down, plus lots and lots of riding. And no hassles from security, stoked!

And finally, feel free to give any shout outs here.
Just wanna thank God for the sunny days, Brian for hooking this up, Stu for doing the edit, Colony, Afray and Etnies. Thanks!

Pacquiao Vs. Marquez 3

War, this is what comes into my mind when I see these two in the ring, Im just hoping HBO,Ref,Judges,etc...brings a good fight and not a controversial end.
Marquez will fight for Pacquiao's WBO Welterweight Title.
 Also The Under Cards,
Timothy Bradley Vs. Joel Casamayor, Casamayor will fight for Bradley's WBO Junior Welterweight Title
Mike Alvarado Vs. Breidis Prescott, 10 Rounds, Junior Welterweights
Luis Cruz Vs. Carlos Burgos, 10 Rounds, Junior Lightweight

Other Weekend Boxing not in the Pacquiao Vs Marquez Undercard,
Austin Trout Vs. Frank Loporto on Friday, Showtime, El Paso,Texas,
Diego Magdaleno Vs. Emmanuel Lucero, Friday,Fox Deportes/Fox Sports Net at Las Vegas
Tyson Fury Vs. Neven Pajkic Saturday, Manchester England

UPDATE: Manny Pacquiao Beats Marquez, After a Controversial End,So the question is , Did he really beat Marquez? He sure did,
He threw more punches,Landed more punches and was the aggressive fighter, If Marquez wanted to be Champion, He has to do better than want he did during the fight. Sure he landed clean power punches, but it wasn't enough to take the WBO Welterweight Title. So should there be a Pacquiao Vs. Marquez 4? Forget about it. He needs to Retire.

Victor Ortiz Deserves It!

Victor Ortiz Deserves that Cheap shot Maywether gave him on the 4th Round, Ortiz was headbutting Mayweather through out the fight, And his team Complain about Mayweather's  elbows and that he is a dirty fighter before the fight with Referee Joe Cortez, Even though I was rooting for Ortiz to win but hey , Protect your self at all times in the ring. There should be any apologize and hugging in the ring, with Mayweather. Ortiz Inexperience cost him the fight. So should there be a rematch? I don't think so. Mayweather was winning all  4  rounds. I would like to see Mayweather Vs. Pacquiao , though during the Post fight press conference Mayweather said he doesn't need Pacquiao anymore.

Worst Referee In Boxing Histoy! Russell Mora

Well after over 30 low blows since the beginning of Round one, Mares took the win from Agbeko.
Unbelievable!! Mares was winning up until half way through the fight, Agbeko seem to be getting Mares the last few rounds, but all those low blows took a toll on Agbeko. There was even a slip from Agbeko and the referee ruled it a knockdown. This has to be one of theWORST Referee in Boxing.  I also found out today that it looks like there will be a Rematch. Agbeko will win the Rematch

David Haye vs Wladimir Klitschko: July 2,2011

I don't keep up with the Heavyweight Division,But im a fan of Boxing and the fight that's coming up this Saturday is the fight to watch. These guys just hate each other personally. I have been watching videos of there past fights on youtube, Both are great fighters but only one will be the winner. I will have to go on Wladimir Klitschko KO. But i wont count David Haye out, tough fight, Someone will go down with a KO. This is a fight I will be watching on Saturday July 2, 2011

Mayweather Vs. Ortiz!

Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather Jr. vs. ‘Vicious’ Victor Ortiz set for Sep. 17!
Photo: Joe Bruiser
Undefeated welterweight and perennial pound-for-pound fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. ended the speculation this morning with an announcement via twitter that confirmed rumours that he was ending his self-imposed retirement and taking a fall fight. ‘Money’ Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs) will fight ‘Vicious’ Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KOs) on September 17, which also happens to fall on the highly sought after Mexican Independence Day Weekend.
Mayweather hasn’t fought since dominating ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley in May 2010 and has been plagued by legal troubles since then. Ortiz is coming off a career best win, rising from the canvass twice to dethrone previously undefeated WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto in what was an action-packed bout this past April.
Ortiz is a young, strong southpaw with speed and power, and should provide a stern test for Mayweather in what will surely be one of the biggest events of the year. Golden Boy Promotions will promote.

I sure hope he isn't playing around with his fans. Its good to read News about Mayweather returning to the ring.

Weekend Fights!

These will be Some great fights to watch this Saturday, June 4, 2011 both Zbik and Chavez have never lost,  And you have Froch and Johnson, Semi Finals of Super Six, Winner to face off Andre Ward.
My predictions: Froch wins by Unanimous Decision, I want Zbik to win but, Chavez may take this.
Zibik by KO ........... eeeeeeeh.

Sebastian Zbik Vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Carl Froch Vs Glen Johnson

Update: Well I just finish watching the Chavez Jr.  fight and i do have to say this, The fight Suck. I was expecting more on Chavez Jr, Zibik got robbed on this fight, He had this fight. But i see that Chavez Jr won this for his Legacy. This is so he can get the fight with Cotto or Martinez. I have to say that if he do fight Cotto or Martinez, the way Chavez Jr perform tonight, he wouldn't stand a chance. Congratulation to Chavez Jr. on his Unanimous Decision win against Sebastian Zibik.
Now to Froch vs Johnson, I did not see the fight , but i just got the news that Froch beat Johnson. So now Froch advances to the Super Six Final with Andre Ward. The Solo Boxeo Friday night fights was a better night then today. Until next time .... Peace
